What are Polyphenols? In a nutshell Polyphenols are a large group of natural compounds found in plants. They’re like tiny warriors that fight for your health in a couple of ways:
Antioxidant power
Polyphenols act as antioxidants, which means they help neutralize harmful free radicals in your body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage your cells and contribute to chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. By mopping up these free radicals, polyphenols may help protect your cells from damage.
Anti-inflammatory effects
Some polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is thought to be at the root of many illnesses. So, by reducing inflammation, polyphenols may help protect against these diseases.
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a great source of polyphenols. There are over 30 different polyphenols found in EVOO, with the most abundant ones being oleocanthal and oleuropein.
